The House Museum of Popular Customs in Sliven shows the traditional culture - rites, rituals and customs typical of Sliven and the region. The exposition is divided between two adjoining houses, both built in the beginning of the 19th century by unknown master builders from Tryavna. The owner of the houses was a merchant dealing in coarse and fine woolen fabrics.
In the Patkoolu House, visitors can explore an exhibition dedicated to Sliven’s craftsman household from the 19th century. The Arnautkina House represents the urban lifestyle of Sliven’s townspeople in the late 19th century and early 20th centuries – a time when the Bulgarian society was strongly influenced by Western European culture.
A renewed exposition “Traditional Culture of the Sliven Region” opened in 2024, presenting calendar rites, ritual and festive costumes from Sliven and its surroundings.
Today, the House Museum of Popular Customs is part of the “Discover Bulgaria – 100 National Tourist Sites”, listed under number 54b, together with another site managed by the Regional History Museum – Sliven, the Tuida Fortress.
