This impressive building, known to generations of Sliven residents as “Dobri Zhelyazkov’s Factory”, was constructed between 1836 and 1843 by the builders Denchoolu Hadzhi Stoycho and master craftsman Todor Karahristov.
The preserved central building, once part of a larger factory complex, is made entirely of stone and stands three stories high, with walls measuring 1.2 to 1.5 meters thick in some places. It is 100 meters long and 16 meters tall, surrounded by an enclosure wall ranging in height from 3.5 to 5 meters.
It is believed that between 1902 and 1904, additional structures were built, including a guardhouse, low auxiliary buildings in the southwest part of the yard, and the surrounding wall – all of which remain preserved today.
From 1904 to 1962, the building served a very different purpose, functioning as a prison, before being recognized for its remarkable industrial and historical value.
