It studies and presents through exhibitions the traditional culture of Sliven and its region. The department has valuable collections of:

Traditional clothing and fabrics from the Sliven region - contains local and regional specifics of the production and function of the festive-ritual, everyday clothing and fabrics of the individual ethnographic groups.

Metal items - copper vessels, iron objects, craft tools.

Jewelry - an essential part of the traditional costume, illustrating the dynamics of production and distribution of Bulgarian and local patterns and motifs.

Wood plastic arts: wood carving - shows the specificity and influence of the individual Bulgarian wood carving schools in the decoration of the Sliven house; craft tools and equipment.

The curator who works in the department organizes, conducts and participates in:

  • Complex expeditions to study cultural heritage annually from 1981 to 1987, 1991
  • Thematic expeditions - "Historical and ethnocultural aspects of outlawry in the Sliven region" - 1995, 1996, 2002, 2003
  • Field studies on the specificity of traditional culture in the Sliven region and its place in contemporary cultural processes
  • They produce scientific publications as a result of their scientific research work:

    • Festive and ritual system
    • Ritual folklore
    • Folklore and history
    • Folklore and modernity

The department employs one specialist: ethnologist.
